The “Tenth Schedule” of the Indian Constitution, often known as the Anti-Defection Law, is the legislative framework in India that is designed to prevent elected legislators from defecting to another political party or from following the party’s official whip on how to vote. This law’s primary goals are to reduce political defections and encourage governmental stability.

The Anti-Defection Law was created to stop “horse-trading” and to keep governments stable by deterring elected officials from often switching parties. Additionally, it aims to prevent legislators from acting in a way that could upset the political system by requiring them to toe the party line. However, because it can occasionally be used to muzzle dissent inside political circles, its deployment has drawn discussion and criticism.
