First Information Report (FIR) is a written document prepared by the police when they receive information about the commission of a cognizable offence. It is a report of information that reaches the police first in point of time and that is why it is called the First Information Report.

Types of FIR:

1. General FIR:

A general F.I.R. is one that is registered in the nearest police station by the party who is offended or the first party against another party in a general transaction.

2. Zero FIR:

Normally, a First Information Report is logged with a serial number in the police station with jurisdiction over the crime but Zero FIR can be logged anywhere in India without any jurisdiction to investigate the crime. Zero FIR is logged as serial number 000. On the recommendation of the Justice Verma Committee in the aftermath of the Nirbhaya gang rape case in 2012 to put a legal obligation on police to take quick action and prevent them from using the excuse of absence of  jurisdiction.

3. Cross F.I.R:

When both parties logged F.I.R. against each other regarding same event then it is called Cross F.I.R.

4. Ente Time FIR:

When FIR is lodged before the happening of an event or we can say commission of an crime.

5. Multiple FIR:

When in respect of a single event, a group of people is offended, hence, they can file their respective FIR’S and this is known as Multiple FIR.  Under section 482 oof CrPC, the High Court has power to club the FIR’S together.
