Together with the advent of the era of comments and Digests, schools of Hindu law were also emerged. The Mitakshara school and the Dayabhaga school are the two primary schools of Hindu law. The Mitakshara school owes its name to Vijnaneshwara’s commentary on the Yajnavalkya smirti. Dayabhaga school owes its origin to Jimutavahana’s digest on leading Smritis by the name of Dayabhaga. Other than Bengal and Assam, the Mitakshara school is dominant in all of India. In Bengal and Assam, the Dayabhaga school is dominant. The Mitakshara school has four sub-schools: the Benaras (Northern and North-West), the Bombay (Western), the Mithila (Bihar), and the Dravida or Madras school. The Dayabhaga school does not have any sub-schools (South India). The Hindu law is in every way a universal law, not a lex loci, or local law.
